TLANTA — The National Private Truck Council convention here last week heard American Trucking Associations President Bill Graves urge trucking companies to work within organizations and listened to the group’s general counsel outline opposition to a Michigan truck tax.

The association of private fleets also elected a new chairman and other officers and heard a safety expert say in-house fleets have a safety record far better than the national average.

ATA President Graves said 600,000 carriers are registered with the Department of Transportation, but “too many are getting a free ride” because they do not belong to an industry association.

Graves said he wanted all freight carriers to join “the association of their choice” and work to advance the interests of trucking.
