rucking industry, law enforcement and private safety groups applauded the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s decision to remove overall carrier score data from its SafeStat Web site, but some said last week that FMCSA needed to do more to overhaul its trucking safety efforts.

FMCSA Administrator Annette Sandberg said last week in a Transport Topics op-ed article that the agency would remove the data from the site immediately and begin efforts to improve them.

Stephen Campbell, executive director of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, said his group’s reaction to Sandberg’s decision was “very positive.”

“[SafeStat] was never designed to be a public information piece,” Campbell told TT. “As a tool, it is valuable to enforcement. We agree with [FMCSA] that it needs to be fixed and we’re working with [them].”
