HF Logistical Solutions said it developed a sensor with a long-lasting battery that will allow its customers to remotely monitor rail cars, containers and their contents.
Rick Zink, MHF’s executive vice president, said the sensor is part of a monitoring system developed specifically to assist companies that ship hazardous materials, but could be adapted to other uses.
He said MHF uses the system on its 3,000 rail cars and containers, but has not made a final decision on whether to commercialize the sensors and sell them to other companies. The system relies on a sensor attached to rail cars.
MHF, Pittsburgh, provides shipping and technical services to companies that generate radioactive and hazardous waste throughout the nation.
