Highway Act Grants FMCSA $2 Bln. for Truck Safety Programs

he $286.4 billion highway act signed by President Bush earlier this month included more than $2 billion for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to fund a variety of truck safety programs.

Overall, the agency received $984.5 million in funding for motor-carrier safety grants and $1.15 billion for administrative expenses covering the period from Oct. 1, 2005 to Sept. 30, 2009.

FMCSA declined to comment to Transport Topics regarding the funding.



But Dick Henderson, director of governmental affairs for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, said the motor-carrier safety provisions of the bill “deal with important issues and funds them at a reasonable level.”
