IBM, SAP Partner to Provide New Software, Consulting for Transportation Industry
Technology and consulting firm IBM and enterprise software company SAP AG said they plan to partner on a new technology platform for the global transportation and logistics industry.
The collaboration will combine IBM’s strategy, consulting and experience in large-scale technology projects with SAP’s enterprise software offerings, the companies announced May 29.
Ocean liners, freight forwarders, railways and other transportation providers can’t control factors such as fuel costs and economic volatility, but they can improve performance through better business processes, aided by analytics, cloud computing, mobility and other technology, they said.
“In moving global freight today, the associated information is as important as the physical flow of the goods,” said Till Dengel, vice president of industry business unit travel and transportation at SAP. “Many freight companies are thus updating their legacy IT environments and embarking on large-scale transformational projects.”
Raimon Christiani, global travel and transportation industry lead at IBM Global Business Services, added: “Using best practices in analytics and other core competencies from IBM together with SAP software, our transportation clients will be better positioned to provide their customers with experiences that form the basis of sustained relationships.”
IBM and SAP said they plan to help companies improve their businesses through information technology, adopt a blend of on-premise and cloud-based processes and keep their IT systems up to date to meet changing requirements.
