Industry Representatives Explore New Approaches to Safety

ALLS CHURCH, Va. — Speakers at a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration “listening session” here said federal safety policy should focus more on drivers and less on equipment, and they suggested ways to improve the agency’s fleet review and rating processes.

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta spoke at the session, held Oct. 19 in suburban Washington, and said FMCSA’s system of compliance reviews is effective, but touches only a small percentage of an estimated 675,000 active interstate motor carriers.

Several speakers said the agency should pay more attention to drivers and road conditions because they contribute to the majority of accidents.
