Intermodal Container Volume Rose to Record Last Year, IANA Says

Intermodal container volume for 2012 rose 5.9% to an all-time high of 13.1 million units, the Intermodal Association of North America said Thursday.

Total intermodal traffic for the year rose 4% to 14.6 million units, and volume was 9.8% higher than the previous benchmark, set in 2007, IANA said.

Domestic container volume rose 12.2% to 5.53 million units, while trailer volume fell 10.1% to 1.52 million units.

Fourth-quarter domestic container volume climbed 10.5% to 1.44 million units, while trailer volume fell 12.2% to 379,698 units.



International container volume fell 0.7% in the quarter to 1.85 million units, IANA said.
