Intermodal rail traffic rose 19.2% for the month of June, the Association of American Railroads said, the largest year-to-year increase since AAR began keeping records in 1990.

June traffic was 1.4% down from the same month in 2008, while seasonally adjusted data showed month-to-month intermodal traffic fell 1.1% from May, the group said.

Traffic rose 9.1% for the week ended Saturday, AAR said in its weekly report released Thursday. Container traffic gained 11.4% to 164,992 units, while trailers dipped 2.7% to 27,962 units.

Freight rail traffic improved 10.6% in June but declined 3.5% in the first week of July, AAR reported.
