nternational Truck and Engine Corp. plans to lay off 230 workers at its medium-duty truck production plant in Springfield, Ohio, by the end of October because of declining sales, a company spokesman told Transport Topics on Thursday.

“Our struggle with the plant has to do with our difficulty with flexibility and a high cost structure,” said Kyle Rose, a spokesman for the company who works at the Springfield plant.

“We staff our lines according to incoming orders and demand,” he told TT.

The plant’s output will be reduced to 120 trucks a day, from 177, Rose said.

pringfield produces Class 6 and 7 medium-duty trucks, and International decided recently that it would not produce the new 4100 Class 5 and 4200 4x4 models at the plant, Rose said.

About 1,350 employees work at the facility, he said. Besides the union line workers and clerical staff to be laid off this month, more managerial positions will be eliminated later this year, though those have not yet been determined, he told TT.

Rose said International is expecting demand to pick up next year for Class 6 and 7 trucks.
