acked by two major engine suppliers, International Truck & Engine Corp. said Dec. 15 it would meet tougher 2007 federal emissions standards without using either the selective catalytic reduction technology that requires a urea additive or developing nitrogen oxides adsorbers.
Engine makers Caterpillar Inc. and Cummins Inc. separately issued statements on the same day explaining how they would comply with 2007 rules without adsorbers or the urea-based systems some manufacturers are advocating.
The decision made Navistar Corp.’s International the first truck maker to outline its strategy for meeting emissions requirements starting in 2007.
