The defense division of Mack Trucks has won two contracts to supply vehicles to the Canadian military.

Mack, a part of Volvo Group, said the contracts are worth a combined C$725 million, or about $557.8 million. The company announced the contracts July 16.

The majority of the work will be making more than 1,500 8x8 trucks called medium-support vehicle systems. An 8x8 configuration has four axles, with power delivered to all four. In contrast, highway tractors for commercial usage are mainly 6x4 or 6x2 configurations.

Mack said it also will provide Canada’s Department of National Defense with five years of in-service support.

“Mack has supplied the Canadian Armed Forces with trucks since World War II, and we are honored to continue to support Canada’s domestic and international missions for years to come,” said Ryan Werling, president of Mack Defense. The defense subsidiary is based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Volvo Group’s North American truck operations are based in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The defense unit also will provide 300 trailers and 150 Armour-Protection Systems as part of the second contract. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2017 with completion in the fall of 2018.

Mack said the vehicle systems will include applications for cargo, material-handling cranes, load-handling systems and mobile repair trucks. System assembly will take place in the Sainte-Claire, Quebec, plant of Prevost, another Volvo company.
