Manufacturers Say Cost to Rule Decision on '07 Engine Design

T. LOUIS — Major engine suppliers told trucking industry officials last week they plan to use the lowest-cost approach to meeting tougher diesel engine emissions standards for 2007 and beyond, but offered widely differing schedules for deciding what types of engines to build.

“It will be a cost-driven decision,” Michael D. Breeden, executive director of national accounts for Cummins Inc., told the National Private Truck Council’s annual conference here April 28.

Tim Tindall, director of emissions products for Detroit Diesel Corp., said his firm was also looking for the “lowest-cost solution” in building an engine to meet much stricter emissions standards the trucking industry will face in a few years.
