Maverick Transportation, Melton Truck Lines and Montgomery Transport recently continued the trend of carriers increasing driver pay and benefits.

Montgomery unveiled a new pay program and other benefits Nov. 11. The Birmingham, Ala.-based flatbed carrier said over-the-road drivers will receive extra appreciation pay of 5 cents for every loaded mile from Nov. 2 to Jan. 31. Dedicated drivers also will also receive an increase in daily pay over the same time period.

“This recent cycle has been one of the most dynamic, yet difficult times many of us have seen. Our drivers stepped up and kept America moving forward,” Montgomery CEO Rollins Montgomery said in a statement. “We are excited to show them our deep appreciation in many ways.”

Montgomery has implemented other initiatives this year as a way to thank drivers. The company increased tarp pay for legal standard loads from $35 to $50 and overdimensional loads from $50 to $60 from Nov. 2 to Feb 1.

Drivers who have been with the company for at least 30 days are eligible for guaranteed weekly minimum pay of up to $1,200. The company also increased breakdown pay from $100 per day to $150 per day in July. Montgomery also noted that it made investments in new equipment.

“The time of our professional drivers is extremely valuable to us, and we are committed to their success,” Montgomery said. “The hardships that our drivers conquer daily deserve to be recognized and rewarded. We will soon remember these trying times as another turning point in our lives.

“As we plan for a brighter tomorrow, I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about our future with more enhancements to driver pay forthcoming.”

The raise will start student drivers at 52 cents per mile and give the most experienced drivers 65 cents.

“In a year where most industries are struggling to find workers, we are very fortunate to have our fleet of hardworking, dedicated drivers and we appreciate all of them,” Russ Elliott, Melton executive vice president and chief operating officer, said Nov. 1. “Driver appreciation is not only one of our core values and stated traditions, but is also a tremendous factor in every decision we make.”

Melton Truck Lines ranks No. 92 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America.
