Maryland State Highway Administration panel recommended that state officials throw out a proposal to implement tolls along a stretch of Interstate 81, after local officials and business owners voiced a strong objection.

“We heard pretty loud and clear from elected officials and the folks in the area that this was not something they wanted to do,” said David Buck, spokesman for Maryland‘s highway administration.

I-81 runs from the New York-Canada border to Knoxville, Tenn., making it a major freight corridor along the eastern portion of the United States. The interstate also passes through Pennsylvania and Virginia, and intersects with Interstate 70 in Maryland.
