New Congress Could Fund Bypassed Highway Projects

ouse of Representatives Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) indicated that when Congress convenes in January he would seek funding for highway projects left out of the 2005 transportation spending bill, a congressional staff member said.

Several representatives were upset that Ernest Istook (R-Okla.), the House Transportation and Treasury Appropriations Subcommittee chairman, had failed to include funding in the bill for highway and other transportation projects.

Hastert met Dec. 7 with some members whose funding requests were not included in the spending package Congress passed Nov. 20.



Angela Sowa, a spokeswoman for Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Penn.) said Weldon also attended that meeting. She said Hastert asked members to put their funding requests in writing. Weldon did.
