ll heavy-duty trucks conducting business in Ontario and Quebec may soon be required to have speed governors set at a maximum of 105 kilometers per hour, or about 65 mph, as the provinces consider measures they say will improve highway safety and air quality.

In Ontario, a speed limiter bill received approval in principle earlier this month from the legislature. It was sent to the legislature’s Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs for further analysis; a final vote is expected later this year.

At the same time, Quebec’s Na-tional Assembly publicly expressed support for the Ontario speed limiter law in its recent Plan of Action on Climate Change, and plans to introduce a bill of its own.

The maximum speed limit for trucks in both provinces is 100 kph — equivalent to about 62 mph.
