LEXANDRIA, Va. — Qualcomm Inc. officials said their new untethered trailer-tracking device had gotten a fast start in the marketplace, with 33,000 orders booked since August, 10,000 of those already shipped.

The officials told Transport Topics reporters and editors that they were gaining fast acceptance of their digital technology system.

Untethered devices attach to a cargo trailer and send tracking signals to a monitoring location without routing signals through the truck cab. In contrast, a tethered tracking system sends the information through the cab’s communications system.

Chris Wolfe, president of Qualcomm’s wireless business unit, and Norman Ellis, the wireless unit’s vice president of transportation and logistics, said they had signed three major customers for the untethered product and planned to have a fourth signed by the end of this year.
