ehicle inspectors handed out fewer hours-of-service violation citations during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s recent 72-hour “Roadcheck” inspection event than in four previous years, CVSA officials told Transport Topics.

During the 2004 Roadcheck, state inspectors issued hours-of-service citations in 3.44% of the checks they performed between June 8 and June 10, said Steve Keppler, CVSA directory of programs and policy. That figure is down from the 2003 Roadcheck, when 3.69% of all inspections found hours violations.

“It’s certainly a good thing,” Keppler told TT. “We probably would have expected we’d still have some issues.”

In January, new federal work rules for truck drivers went into effect, changing the number of hours a driver could work consecutively and increasing the amount of rest a driver must take before resuming work.
