Senators Question Nominee Hill On Size-Weight, Safety Issues

ASHINGTON — John Hill, the Bush administration’s nominee to head the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, faced questions about truck size and weight and the agency’s on-going effort to revise driver work rules during his Senate confirmation hearing here June 8.

Hill did not take a position on allowing increases in truck sizes and weights, and said the agency has addressed the issues that led a federal court to reject its new hours-of-service rule almost two years ago.

Hill told the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee that he wants to bring together representatives of the trucking industry with Congress, state and local agencies and other related groups to improve safety.
