Shell to Develop LNG Transportation Corridors in Great Lakes, Gulf Coast

Shell Oil Co. said Tuesday it will develop liquefied natural gas transportation corridors in North America for trucking and commercial transportation.

The company said it will install LNG production units in Geismar, La., and in Sarnia, Ontario, to serve its marine and heavy-duty on-road customers in the surrounding areas.

The LNG transport corridors in the Great Lakes and Gulf Coast regions follow Shell’s decision in 2011 for a similar transportation corridor in Alberta, Canada.

“Natural gas is an abundant and cleaner-burning energy source in North America” and Shell is working “to make LNG a viable fuel option for the commercial market,” Shell President Marvin Odum said in a statement.

Shell reiterated its announcement of last summer that it intends to work with TravelCenters of America to provide LNG for truck fleets at U.S. truck stops.

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. is involved in a similar project to build more LNG infrastructure for heavy trucking in the United States.
