oodservice distributor Sysco Corp. has replaced Wal-Mart Stores as the nation’s largest private fleet operator, according to a new annual analysis of shipper-owned freight carriers by Transport Topics.

Private carriers haul as much freight as all for-hire carriers combined and account for an estimated 40% of the money spent on transportation, according to a 2002 study of freight trends published by American Trucking Associations and Global Insight Inc.

The 2003 ranking of the largest private carriers in North America appears this week in Transport Topics as a separate supplement; TT’s analysis and ranking of the for-hire market appeared in the July 21 issue.
