Ground was broken Aug. 15 for a yard for empty containers inside the Bayport Container Terminal as part of a new public-private partnership at Port Houston.

Terminal Link Texas is constructing what will be a 25-acre container yard, slated for completion by July 2018, and aims to buttress its overall stacking capacity by as much as 80%. It also will allow for increased container freight station activities and improved maintenance and repair operations.

As part of the lease agreement between Port Houston and Terminal Link Texas, the company will return 14 acres that it operates there to Port Houston.

Container volumes have been growing at Port Houston and ticked up 14% in the first half of the year compared with last year, according to the release.

“Growth is expected to continue for the foreseeable future as petrochemical facilities along the Houston Ship Channel expand and produce more plastic resins for export,” Terminal Link Texas said.

Upon completion, the terminal will have seven berths. Port Houston, which also operates the Barbours Cut Container Terminal, handles about two-thirds of all containers moving through the Gulf of Mexico.
