TIA to Offer Model Broker Contract
UCSON, Ariz. — The Transportation Intermediaries Association said it intends to release its version of a model contract for freight brokers and carriers on May 1, despite objections from trucking industry officials who said it doesn’t do enough to protect the rights of carriers to collect unpaid freight charges from shippers.
At the organization’s conference here April 6-8, TIA President Robert Voltmann said the draft agreement “goes farther towards protecting the carrier than any other broker-carrier agreement in the market.”
TIA’s model contract, he said, would obligate freight brokers to pay carriers even if the broker isn’t paid by the shipper. Another provision gives carriers the right to collect unpaid freight charges from shippers if the broker is notified in advance.
