Trailer-Tracking Firms Say They Expect Sales Boom

fter years of hope and hype, sales of untethered trailer-tracking systems are about to take off, according to several industry suppliers who say they are on the verge of landing contracts with some big-name trucking companies.

“The technology has improved dramatically and the price has dropped to the point where trailer tracking is now a viable option for freight carriers and private fleets,” said General Electric Co. spokesman Patrick Brennan.

In May, GE’s TIP trailer leasing and rental division launched a trailer-tracking system called GE VeriWise, re-entering a market it first tried to penetrate in 1998 with a satellite messaging service called GlobalWave.
