Transport Execs Want ‘Balance’ In Cargo Inspections Policy

ORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — With Democrats set to take over Congress in January, transportation officials said they hoped lawmakers would back off earlier calls for inspection of all cargo containers and tighter hazardous materials procedures.

Democrats have long backed inspecting more cargo than is currently examined.

“There was a lot of rhetoric leading up to the election, such as 100% inspection of cargo containers. We are hoping that was just campaign rhetoric and no indication of actual policy, because it just won’t work,” said Robert Voltmann, president of the Transportation Intermediaries Association.
