TRB Group Backs User Fees For Repair of Highways

img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>Implementing user-fee financing of road projects by tying them closer to the costs of highway wear and tear is one way to help maintain sufficient capacity for decades to come, the Transportation Research Board said in a recent study.

TRB's Committee for the Study of Freight Capacity for the Next Century also recommended that the federal government limit its involvement and subsidization of transportation projects, while focusing on the economic efficiency of these projects.

While some of these ideas would cost the trucking industry in the short term, the committee said the long-term benefits were much greater.
