Truck Production Continues As ABS Negotiations Proceed
Production of new tractors and trailers continued through a March 1 federal deadline for a new safety feature, thanks to a stockpile of the electronic chips needed to activate an in-cab warning light to alert drivers of malfunctioning antilock braking systems on trailers.Meanwhile, makers of the systems continue negotiating licensing agreements with the inventor of the chip’s circuitry.
The dispute has pinched off supply of the chips and still threatens to shut down vehicle production when the backlog runs out, said a group of manufacturers and associations during a Feb. 27 conference call.
