Truckers See Less Freight From Maquiladoras

or the past three years, Rafael Del Barrio has watched the ebb and flow of truck freight crossing the U.S.-Mexican border.

As manager of Mexico operations for USA Truck in Laredo, Texas, Del Barrio has seen business grow from zero in 1997 to about $15 million in 2002. USA Track is No. 60 on the Transport Topics list of 100 largest trucking companies.

This year, however, is different.



“The economy has been soft and that has affected everything,” Del Barrio said. “We’re not seeing the growth that we have had in previous years.”
