he Transportation Security Administration has granted American Trucking Associations $100,000 from funds aimed at improving highway security to expand its Highway Watch program and continue developing a proposal for a national communications center to process information from truck drivers about unsafe and suspicious activity on the nation’s highways.

With the grant, ATA plans to add Illinois and New Jersey to the states participating in Highway Watch, an association official said.

So far, 27 states have established Highway Watch programs, with California and Texas recently signing on to the program, which trains truck drivers to spot and report unsafe highway conditions and potential security threats such as terrorism.
