he Transportation Security Administration will not delay fingerprinting for commercial drivers who haul hazardous materials until a program credentialing other transportation workers goes into effect, an agency spokeswoman said.

American Trucking Associations, in comments to TSA, recommended the federal transportation security agency delay using fingerprint background checks for hazmat haulers until the agency instituted its Transportation Worker Identification Credential program.

“TSA will begin fingerprinting in all 50 states and the District of Columbia no later than Jan. 31, 2005,” TSA spokeswoman Andrea Fuentes said in a May 28 e-mail to Transport Topics.

“The hazmat driver population is distinct from the maritime worker population, which is the primary focus of TWIC,” she said.
