Competition wasn’t as fierce 40 years ago as 171 drivers from 33 states competed in Indianapolis for what would become the National Truck Driving Championships in 1985. What is the same then and now is the pride of winning, as reflected in this story by editorial assistant Oliver Patton, who would go to become editor of Transport Topics.

The 2015 NTDC and the National Step Van Driving Championship on Aug. 11-15 in St. Louis is expected to draw 431 drivers from all 50 states and 85 different companies to compete for the title of Grand Champion.
