A shortage of diesel fuel was headline news for trucking even before the Arab oil embargo in October 1973 led to long lines at the gas pump for motorists and calls for energy independence.

Among the solutions offered at the time was production of liquid fuel from coal and oil from shale, the latter of which did, in fact, spark a surge in energy production in the U.S. and a reduction in oil imports.
