Pictured in this issue of  Transport Topics, DOT’s first secretary, Alan S. Boyd, celebrated the department's first official day of operation on April 1, 1967, by riding in the hot air balloon “Golden Bear” with balloonist Don Piccard.

The law that established a cabinet-level Department of Transportation did not pass Congress until ninety-two years after the first such legislation had been introduced.
