TT100 Ranks For-Hire Carriers

ver the past two years, trucking executives have faced a daunting array of challenges, from a weak economy undermining the demand for freight hauling, to rising costs for basic necessities such as fuel, insurance and equipment, and nagging uncertainties about the industry in general.

Yet in the ensuing turmoil lie what could be the seeds of recovery and renewal, according to an analysis of financial operating results for the 100 largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada.

The 2003 edition of the Transport Topics 100 is divided into two parts, with the annual ranking of for-hire carriers in today’s issue, followed by the listing of the 100 largest private carriers in the July 28 issue.



In each supplement, it is apparent that size, by itself, is no guarantee of survival. Consolidated Freightways, the nation’s third-largest less-than-truckload carrier in 2001 with a No. 12 overall ranking on the TT 100, shut down in September 2002.
