Uber Freight on Nov. 14 launched Broker Access, a program allowing brokers to book and execute loads on the Uber Inc. unit’s carrier network while remaining the sole broker on the load.

A capacity-as-a-service solution, Broker Access is designed to boost productivity, service levels and business growth for brokers, Uber Freight said.

Broker Access helps automate operations by enabling the booking, execution, tracking and payment for loads via a self-service portal or via turnkey application programming interface, electronic data interchanges or transportation management software integrations.

“As the intermediary between shippers and carriers, brokers especially face unprecedented pressure to do more with less,” said Brooks McMahon, Uber Freight vice president of emerging products, in a Nov. 14 blog on LinkedIn. “With freight volumes fluctuating and operational complexity increasing, traditional ways of sourcing capacity no longer suffice on their own. To thrive, brokers need to incorporate new approaches that offer speed, flexibility and efficiency at scale.

“Broker Access isn’t designed to compete with your carrier sales team or load boards — rather, it complements them. Broker Access augments the people, processes and systems you already have by giving you more tools to cover more loads and reduce your total costs,” he added.

Uber Freight ranks No. 13 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest logistics companies in North America, and No. 10 on the list of top freight brokerage firms.

In October, 205 freight brokerages departed the industry, cutting the total number of active brokerages to 25,774, according to Brush Pass Research. On a year-over-year basis, the number of brokerages decreased 10.9%, and the total fell 17.5% compared with two years ago.

“Our platform is now more accessible and connected than ever, and brokers love the experience Broker Access delivers,” said Uber Freight Founder Lior Ron. “This solution gives them the tools to not only optimize their freight operations but also focus on growing their business and strengthening relationships across the supply chain.”

Early adopters have seen substantial benefits, they say.

“Mariner Logistics has been at the forefront of innovation in freight brokerage, and as the first brokerage company to leverage Uber Freight, we’ve seen firsthand how this platform enhances our ability to cover challenging shipments at market-competitive prices,” said Ken Apple, vice president of engineering at Mariner Logistics.

“Uber Freight’s Broker Access technology capabilities throughout the booking process saves a tremendous amount of time for our team. The dashboard is also a valuable tool for tracking loads and managing documents and more,” added Seamless Logistics Truckload Manager Libby Whited.
