Volvo Delivers 35 Nat Gas-Powered Trucks to Supervalu
Volvo Trucks North America delivered 35 compressed natural gas-powered tractors to grocery chain Supervalu.
The grocer operates 400 trucks and has a goal of converting 65% of its fleet to natural gas by 2015, according to Volvo.
“Expanding the use of compressed natural gas trucks in our fleet is good for both the environment and our bottom line, and will help us continue Supervalu’s commitment to operating in a sustainable manner,” Mike Lech, vice president of logistics for Supervalu’s Eastern region, said in a statement.
The CNG-powered day cabs will operate out of the company’s Mechanicsville, Va., distribution center, where a fast-fill CNG station was recently installed.
“We’re pleased to partner with Supervalu to deliver the latest in natural gas-powered vehicle technology,” Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North American sales and marketing, said in a statement.
“Grocery distribution provides an excellent opportunity for environmentally conscious companies like Supervalu to utilize the clean-burning domestically abundant fuel,” Nyberg said.
