Volvo Trucks North America plants to lay off 1,100 workers at a Virginia truck production plant next month, citing a weak economy and sagging truck sales, the Roanoke Times reported.
The truck maker will reduce production at its New River Valley plant in Dublin, Va., by more than a third and reduce production at the facility to one shift, the paper reported.
The layoffs, which will begin the week of May 12, are well above the previously announced 650 workers the company said in December it would lay off. (Click here for previous coverage.)
Earlier this year, a six-week-long strike at the plant by United Auto Workers members halted production for more than three weeks and left some truck orders unfilled, the paper said.
The UAW strike at the facility ended in mid-March.
