Wabash Adds New Trailer Tail; Aerodynamic Device Is Fourth Offered in 2015
Trailer maker Wabash National Corp. has unveiled AeroFin XL, its fourth aerodynamic solutions product offered this year.
The AeroFin XL is a lightweight and durable aerodynamic tail device that directs airflow across the rear of the trailer to reduce aerodynamic drag, Wabash said. The device deploys and retracts automatically with swing door operation, requiring no additional interaction from the driver. It also does not interfere with trailer loading and unloading.
“We have a responsibility to our customers to continually provide innovative solutions that lower their total cost of ownership,” Brian Bauman, vice president and general manager of Wabash Composites, said in a statement.
When used in conjunction with Wabash National’s Ventix DR, a drag reduction system, the AeroFin XL provides over 10% improvement in fuel economy as certified by an independent third-party in accordance with SAE J1252 Wind Tunnel Test. Together, the devices are verified as an EPA SmartWay Elite aerodynamic device combination, a new category for the SmartWay technology program that recognizes devices providing the highest levels of fuel savings.
When used as a stand-alone device, the AeroFin XL provides over 4% improvement in fuel economy, Wabash said.
Wabash said the AeroFin XL builds on the success of its DuraPlate AeroSkirt, introduced in 2009. Earlier this year, Wabash introduced the AeroFin Tail Device, Ventix DRS and AeroSkirt CX.
“As the leading producer of semi-trailers and liquid transportation systems in North America, we realize there is no single solution that is ideal for every trailer application and customer,” Bauman said. “It’s important that carriers understand aerodynamic testing methods and the questions that need to be asked when specifying aerodynamic devices.”
