AN ANTONIO — Less-than-truckload carriers Yellow Transportation and Roadway Express may now be jointly owned, but they continue to compete, a Yellow executive said, even while cooperating on issues such as technology integration.

“It’s something we knew would happen as the acquisition got finalized. We call it intense cooperation,” James Welch, Yellow’s chief executive officer, said in a Nov. 15 interview during this year’s Intermodal Expo/TransComp here.

The two LTL companies merged last December, forming holding company Yellow Roadway Corp., which is No. 3 in the Transport Topics 100 listing of for-hire North American carriers.

Welch said that while the two companies engage in “healthy competition,” they have been integrating back-room functions such as technology, maintenance, purchasing and security.
