While Security Is Important, Fleets Also Worry About Costs

n spite of the abundance of high-tech ideas about how to improve security some fleet managers are showing a preference for simple theft-deterrent hardware, stepped-up training and better emergency response procedures to address threats.

For security products to win a place in trucking, industry officials said, the benefits must be commensurate with the cost.

“There’s very little room to make a massive investment in new security technologies,” said Daniel Murray, director of research for the American Transportation Research Institute, an affiliate of American Trucking Associations that is helping federal officials eval-uate the costs and benefits of new transportation security products.



“Even if the return on investment is positive, many fleets don’t have money in the bank to make the outlays,” he said.
