teve Williams, who became the 59th chairman of American Trucking Associations Oct. 7, said he believes there is a transportation crisis looming that will challenge trucking in several fundamental ways and that he wants to strengthen the trucking federation so it can lead the industry to confront the crisis.

The looming issue is highway congestion, which is projected to get much worse over the next several years, he said. In a recent interview with Transport Topics, Williams said the industry needs to position itself to make the public policy changes that will be needed to keep goods moving.

“We spend too much time in airports and our offices,” Williams said. “If you get out on the road, you get a different perception. You don’t understand congestion until you have to work in it.”

Williams, the chairman and chief executive officer of flatbed carrier Maverick Transportation, succeeded Fred Burns Jr., president of Burns Motor Freight in Marlinton, W.Va., as ATA chairman.
