USA Truck reported first-quarter 2018 net income of $1 million, or 13 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $4.9 million, or minus 61 cents a share, in the first quarter of 2017.

Union Pacific Railroad reported first-quarter net income of $1.3 billion, or $1.68 per share, compared with $1.1 billion, or $1.16, in the first quarter of 2017.

Universal Logistics Holdings reported first-quarter net income of $10.4 million, or 37 cents per share, a rise of 147% from $4.3 million reported for the first quarter a year ago.

Spending on truck freight services surged nearly 25% and freight shipments grew 12.6% in 2017 as the economy expanded and the trucking industry paid more to obtain capacity and on driver compensation, according to the U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index.

Canadian National Railway reported April 23 first-quarter net income of C$741 million, or $1 a share, on revenues of $3.2 billion, a decline of $12 million.
