Among the advantages Nikola Motor Co. touted when it unveiled the industry’s first Class 8 electric truck running on a hydrogen fuel cell and battery pack was the ability to significantly reduce fleet maintenance expenses.

Cummins Inc., the industry’s only independent engine manufacturer, outlined how the company envisions using multiple alternative propulsion systems to power Class 8 trucks within the next 10 years in a statement provided to Transport Topics.

The average used Class 8 truck sold in October entered the resale market with lower mileage than those sold a year earlier, but its sales price was down about 14% due to soft demand and an excessive inventory of unsold vehicles, analysts said.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel slid 0.1 cent to $2.420 a gallon, according to the Department of Energy, as crude prices reflected the uncertainty global production would be slowed.
