New trailer orders totaled 33,400 in October, the second strongest figure in 2015 despite dropping 30% from the same month a year earlier, which was the highest on record, ACT Research reported.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel rose 1.7 cents a gallon to $2.502 last week, the first increase in three weeks, the Department of Energy reported.

The U.S. average retail diesel price fell 1.3 cents a gallon to $2.485, the third consecutive weekly decline, the Department of Energy reported Nov. 2.

September trailer orders of 35,952 marked the highest total this year, according to ACT Research.

A major auction of fleet-owned, model year 2012-2013 sleeper trucks in mid-September pulled in lower-than-expected prices and may have signaled the start of a market erosion, according to Chris Visser, an analyst with American Truck Dealers.    

Engine maker Cummins Inc. said last week it would reduce its workforce by 2,000 employees, or about 4% of its global payroll, and close or restructure some manufacturing facilities as a result of lower demand for its products, including truck engines.
