January U.S. manufacturing activity rose to the highest level since June, the Institute for Supply Management said Wednesday.

LAS VEGAS — Manufacturers of truck components and parts meeting here bristled at the Obama administration’s regulatory policies, calling them onerous and difficult to comply with, while the president of American Trucking Associations said his industry probably will not get what it craves most this year, a new, comprehensive federal transportation plan.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — With its Class 8 truck order book overflowing and all signs pointing to a continuing market recovery, Daimler Trucks North America said it will add a second shift to its primary U.S. production facility, creating 1,200 new jobs.

An index of manufacturing activity in the Chicago area dipped in December but showed continued expansion, the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago said Thursday.

This year was the first in which all truck manufacturers had their “vertical integration” model up and running, offering trucks with their own engines — the same way cars are sold.
