FedEx Corp. reported net income rose 12.7%, excluding one-time costs, for the first quarter of fiscal 2017 compared with the same period a year ago.

Second-quarter earnings rose at YRC Worldwide and XPO Logistics’ less-than-truckload unit, but results of other publicly traded carriers slipped along with the struggling U.S. industrial sector.

YRC Worldwide Inc. reported that earnings rose 4% in the second quarter due to the decline in expenses outpacing the drop in revenue for the company’s two less-than-truckload divisions.

Universal Logistics Holdings Inc. second-quarter earnings fell 32%, and Heartland Express Inc. net income slipped 30%, consistent with weaker results reported by almost every other truckload carrier.

Commercial vehicle supplier Wabco Holdings Inc. reported earnings and revenue rose in the second quarter and in the six-month period as it added market share.

Knight Transportation Inc., Covenant Transportation Group Inc. and Roadrunner Transportation Systems reported weaker third-quarter results due to the freight market.

Echo Global Logistics reported a jump in second-quarter earnings year-over-year, primarily tied to stronger truckload volume and transactional revenue.

Weaker energy-related freight shipments led two more North American railroads to report lower second-quarter earnings, including a decline of 6% at Norfolk Southern Corp. and 3% at Canadian National Railway.

Multistate truck dealership Rush Enterprises Inc. said net income was cut nearly in half and revenue slipped in the second quarter as large fleet customers “severely” reduced demand for new trucks.
