The U.S. Energy Information Administration on July 7 released fuel prices covering a three-week reporting delay, and the national average price for diesel fell 10.8 cents to $5.675 in its second straight decline.

Releasing oil from the U.S. government’s strategic reserve would have a “short-lived” impact on soaring fuel prices, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The national average price for diesel climbed 3.4 cents to $3.373 a gallon, according to Energy Information Administration data for the week ending Sept. 6.

The national average price for a gallon of diesel rose 1.5 cents to $3.339, according to Energy Information Administration data released Aug. 30. But that did not include fuel price increases or consider the damage resulting from Hurricane Ida.

Oil was propped up by the biggest decline in U.S. crude inventories this year, signaling a bright spot in a market weakened by COVID-19.

BILLINGS, Mont. — U.S. energy consumption plummeted to its lowest level in more than 30 years this spring as the nation’s economy largely shut down because of the coronavirus, federal officials reported July 29.

Though oil slid to an eight-week low, the drop was tempered by an unexpected decline in U.S. crude inventories and as the World Health Organization opted against declaring the virus a global health emergency.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel fuel rose 2.9 cents to $3.133 a gallon as the benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil price closed at $68.93 a barrel April 23, a jump of $5.92.
