Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Co. will join forces to build pickup trucks, delivery vans and possibly more, pledging to put old rivalries aside and work together to confront a rapidly changing auto industry.

Ford Motor Co. said it will cut thousands of jobs, weed out slow-selling variants and potentially close entire factories in Europe, as the carmakers’s global cost-cutting drive targets a region that has been a drag on earnings for years.

HANOVER, Germany — Ford Trucks offers only light- and medium-duty vehicles in North America, but the brand is aiming to make a splash in the heavy-duty segment in certain international markets.

Ford Motor Co. will spend nearly $740 million to renovate the Michigan Central Station and other sites the automaker purchased in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, the company said Aug. 14.

Ford Motor Co. profit fell to $1.07 billion in the second quarter, down about 50% from the $2.05 billion it made in the second quarter of 2017.
