PHOENIX — The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration sent its new proposed “wetlines” regulation to the White House Office of Management and Budget on Oct. 15 for review.

Several trade groups told federal regulators that requiring more detailed information on applications for special permits to haul hazardous materials will not increase hazmat safety and will increase the paperwork burden on applicants.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has proposed a rule that would eliminate requirements for special permits to haul some hazmats, ranging from liquefied petroleum gas to anhydrous ammonia fertilizers.

Federal officials have granted Boston a 45-day extension to keep restrictions in place on where trucks carrying hazardous materials can travel in the city.

Trucks carrying hazardous materials will be allowed to pass through Boston’s streets starting next week, after the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration lifted the city’s restrictions on hazmat movement, the Boston Globe reported Thursday.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said it will implement a new online application process that will allow hazmat materials special permits to be reviewed in a timely manner, beginning May 1.

The Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has increased registration fees to up $2,600 for large motor carriers that carry hazardous materials, American Trucking Associations said.
