UPS Inc. profits essentially were flat year-over-year in the third quarter, ticking down about 0.5% or $6 million as the parcel giant also announced a 4.9% rate increase effective Dec. 24 to match other less-than-truckload carriers.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will grant UPS Inc. temporary exemption from parts of the upcoming electronic logging device mandate, according to a document scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on Oct. 20.

UPS Inc. generated 7.7% more global revenue during the second quarter and improved net income by 9.1% year-over-year based on “balanced performance across all segments."
